Black Rock Rendezvous

We know you’d rather be camping out on the playa, and we would too. Since that’s not an option just yet, we’ve been cooking up the next best thing.

Join us May 25 – 29, for online presentations, virtual activities, exploring, sing a longs and campfire fun!

Get set for early evening programming throughout the week. Grab some dinner, gather the kids, housemates, and settle in for some online educational fun. 


  • Black Rock Ecology. Fairy Shrimp, Desert Dace, and the Mammoth!
  • Leave No Trace (LNT) Workshop. What to know about desert camping.
  • Tread Lightly Workshop. OHV use in the Black Rock Desert is up as it’s a great place to recreate! Did you know the dos and don’ts for OHVs in this area? You should!
  • Rocketry. Learn about Rocketry from experts through videos and more.
  • Desert Songs and Sing-a-Longs with Elizabeth Cadigan – get out your ukelele! Liz will be with us all week with a special sing-a-long on Thursday.

Welcome and Introductions

Meet the organizations hosting the Black Rock Rendezvous 2020, learn about the first “virtual” Rendezvous, ask questions, and say hello!

Batty about Bats!

Join scientist and author, Rachael Freeman Long, for a conversation about Bats of the Black Rock Desert. Afterward, she’ll be doing a reading from her children’s book “The Black Rock Trilogy: Gold Fever.”

Leave-No-Trace Workshop

Join the Leave No Trace Teams to learn about the Leave No Trace Center, our latest research and educational resources, and ask any burning questions you’ve always had.

Launching Rockets on the Playa

Presented by AeroPAC – learn about launched high-powered rockets on the playa

5 – 6 pm

Backyard Birds with Great Basin Bird Observatory

We will be discussing backyard birds including common species, essential birding resources and materials, and natural history! We will go over some common bird species you may see in your backyard as well as their songs and calls. We will also discuss natural history focusing on breeding bird behavior.

6 – 7 pm

Astronomy Night!

Cook up a comet — and explore how to see an actual one this month! — as well as other cool night sky objects — with team members from the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center on a live Zoom call! The experts will also be recommending a great at-home telescope (link below)


Thursday, May 28th

Tread Lightly! Workshop

Have you always wondered what Tread Lightly! was all about? Interested in finding out how you can do your part in preventing trail closures, recreating responsibly, and giving back to the outdoor community? Then join Allana, Outdoor Ethics Program Director for Nevada Outdoor School, in this 1 hour workshop on the Tread Lightly! Principles and Black Rock specific tips! *Attendees will be encouraged to participate in online-based activities through either audio or video interaction throughout the session.*

One Million Year History of the Black Rock Desert

Cathy Busby is Professor of Geology Emerita and Research Scientist at UC Davis. She gives talks about the Geology of the Black Rock Desert twice a week at the Earth Guardians pavilion at Burning Man every year. Tune in for a quick tour of the geology – it will be fun and interesting!

Campfire Songs, Open Mic, and the Annual Dutch Oven Cook-Off

Hosted by songwriter Elizabeth Cadigan. Watch dutch oven chefs in action! Seasoned veterans battling up-and-coming dutch oven stars. It’s so exciting, you can almost taste the meals…almost.
